"Love Will Tear Us Autonomously" is a song by English language rock ring Joy Partition, released in June 1980 as a non-anthology unmarried. Its lyrics were inspired by lead vocalist Ian Curtis'due south marital problems and struggles with epilepsy.[5] The unmarried was released the month later his suicide.

The song was certified platinum in the U.k., selling over 600,000 copies, and has an ongoing legacy as a defining song of the era. In 2002, NME named "Love Will Tear Us Apart" as the greatest single of all time, while Rolling Rock, in 2004 and 2011, named it ane of the 500 best songs always.

Groundwork [edit]

"Love Will Tear United states of america Apart" was written about Ian Curtis' troubled relationship with his wife, Deborah Woodruff, whom he married in August 1975. Additionally, information technology deals with his own struggles with epilepsy, which he was diagnosed with in 1979, and the overwhelming stress of holding down a twenty-four hour period job and his growing career equally a vocalist.[6]

At a Joy Division gig in October 1979, Curtis met Belgian announcer and music promoter Annik Honoré and the two began a relationship, which caused farther distress between Curtis and Woodruff.[6] [vii]

Speaking about her human relationship with Curtis in a 2010 interview with Belgian magazine supplement Focus, Honoré said:

It was a completely pure and platonic human relationship, very childish, very chaste… I did not have a sexual human relationship with Ian, he was on medication, which rendered it a not-concrete relationship. I am and then fed upwardly that people question my give-and-take or his: people can say whatever they desire, but I am the but person to have his letters… Ane of his messages says that the relationship with his wife Deborah had already finished prior to united states meeting each other.[8]

Recording [edit]

Joy Division first recorded "Love Will Tear Us Apart" at Pennine Studios, Oldham, on 8 January 1980, along with the B-side, "These Days". This version was similar to the version the ring played live. Nonetheless, singer Ian Curtis and producer Martin Hannett disliked the results and the ring reconvened at Strawberry Studios, Stockport in March to re-record information technology.[3] Drummer Stephen Morris recalled:

Martin Hannett played i of his mind games when we were recording it – it sounds like he was a tyrant, but he wasn't, he was dainty. We had this 1 battle where information technology was nearly midnight and I said, "Is information technology all right if I become home, Martin – it'southward been a long day?" And he said [whispers], "OK... y'all become home". So I went dorsum to the flat. Just got to sleep and the phone rings. "Martin wants yous to come up dorsum and do the snare pulsate". At four in the morning! I said, "What'southward wrong with the snare drum!?" So every fourth dimension I hear "Love Volition Tear The states Autonomously", I grit my teeth and think myself shouting downwardly the telephone, "YOU Bounder!" ... I can feel the anger in information technology even now. Information technology'due south a peachy song and it'south a great production, but I do get anguished every time I hear it.[ix]

The guitar on the recording, a 12-cord Eko guitar, was played by Bernard Sumner.[x] While Curtis mostly did non play guitar, to perform the vocal live, the ring taught him how to strum a D major chord. Sumner said:

Ian didn't actually desire to play guitar, but for some reason we wanted him to play it. I can't remember the reason at present... We showed him how to play D and we wrote a vocal. I wonder if that'southward why we wrote "Love Will Tear Us Autonomously", yous could drone a D through it. I recollect he played it alive because I was playing keyboards.[10]

While Joy Sectionalization were recording, U2 were in the studio to encounter Hannett about producing their unmarried "11 O'Clock Tick Tock". U2 singer Bono said of the come across:

Talking to Ian Curtis is... or was a strange experience considering he'south very warm... he talked—it was like two people inside of him—he talked very light, and he talked very well-mannered, and very polite. Simply when he got behind the microphone he actually surged along; in that location was some other energy. It seemed similar he was just 2 people and, you know, "Dear Volition Tear Us Apart", it was like [when] that record was released... it was like, as if, there were the personalities, divide; there they were, torn apart.[11]

Releases [edit]

It was get-go recorded for a John Pare session in November 1979, then re-recorded in January 1980 and March 1980. Information technology is the latter version that appears on the 1988 Substance album. The January 1980 version, which has become known as the "Pennine version", originally appeared equally ane of the single's B-sides.

"Love Will Tear Usa Autonomously" became Joy Partition's offset chart hitting, reaching number 13 in the UK Singles Chart.[12] The following month, the single topped the Great britain Indie Chart.[thirteen] The song also peaked at number 42 on the Billboard disco chart in October 1980.[14] "Love Will Tear United states Apart" also reached number 1 in New Zealand in June 1981.[15]

Encompass photograph [edit]

According to Curtis'south wife Deborah, to create the unmarried comprehend photo, the song championship was etched upon a sheet of metallic; this was aged with acid and exposed to the weather to create the appearance of a stone slab.[18] For the 12" version of the unmarried, a photo of a grieving angel on the Ribaudo family tomb in Genoa'southward Monumental Cemetery of Staglieno (sculpted by Onorato Toso c. 1910) was used. The photograph was taken by Bernard Pierre Wolff in 1978.[19]

Music video [edit]

The video was shot past the band themselves on 25 April 1980[20] equally they rehearsed the vocal at T. J. Davidson's studio, in Knott Manufactory, Manchester urban center centre, where the band had previously rehearsed during the early days of their career. At the kickoff of the video, the door that opens and shuts is carved with Ian Curtis' name; reportedly this was the get-go of an abusive bulletin (the rest later erased) carved into the door.

Due to poor production, the video'south color is 'browned out' at some points. Also, equally the track recorded during the recording of the video was poor, it was replaced with the unmarried-edit recording of the song by the band'southward tape company in Australia, leading to problems with the synchronisation of music and video. This edited version of the music video would later become the official version due to the comeback of sound quality.

This was the simply promotional video the ring always produced as Ian Curtis hanged himself iii weeks after the video was recorded.[21]
