If you ask any New York–area designer to name a favorite decor find they snagged for a song, chances are it's from Design on a Dime. The annual event—the brainchild of designer James Huniford—sees top interior designers create vignettes full of donated furniture and decor, which are sold at clearance prices to benefit Housing Works, the New York organization supporting those impacted by AIDS and homelessness. Professional designers and design lovers alike have scored everything from bespoke curtains to antique furniture to luxe accessories at the shopping extravaganza, now in its 16th year. After a COVID-induced pause last year, the event is back and better than ever: Now, you can shop the sale virtually as well as in-person.
Between May 20 and 22, shoppers can browse vignettes curated by top designers either in-store at Housing Works's three New York City locations, or online through the organization's e-shop. And there's a whole lot to browse: This year's participating designers are some of the best in the business. Expect to see vignettes from the likes of Alessandra Branca, Rayman Boozer, Redd Kaihoi, Nick Olsen, Peti Lau, Beth Diana Smith, and more—featuring all of their favorite brands, for a total of hundreds of high-design items up for grabs.
"Design on a Dime has always been about interior designers joining together to make a difference in other people's lives, and I think now more than ever, we're at the forefront of trying to reopen New York City," says Huniford.
The past year was an exceptionally trying one for Housing Works, with fundraisers like Design on a Dime put on hold as homeless New Yorkers struggled more than ever due to the pandemic. Now, design talents are rallying to bring the best of the best to Design on a Dime to support the vital work the organization has continued to do throughout the past year.

"I just love that even though a lot of manufacturers had a really difficult year, they still opened their hearts and asked, 'What can I donate,'" says Joy Moyler, a longtime Housing Works supporter and one of this year's Design on a Dime co-chairs (along with Young Huh and Jamie Drake, plus honorary chair Patricia Arquette). "I exceeded my original intent because people found out through social media that I was participating, and they called and sent emails and said, 'What can I do or give?'"
Moyler's vignette, at the Gramercy Housing Works location, will speak to her love of tabletop decor and feature items from Ralph Lauren's Burleigh collaboration, furniture from Serena & Lily, and much more.
And, as Huniford reminds us, "All the money raised goes towards the cause, whether it's a job training program, a woman's health center, offering dental to people who need it. It's giving people a second chance at their lives—everybody wants a second chance."
"My motto is 'Good design saves lives,'" adds Moyler. "And with the sale of these beautiful products, you're doing more than just enhancing your home—you're enhancing the quality of someone's life by providing healthcare and shelter. What could be better than that?"
